Prominent Melbourne Artist and Sculptor Bart Sanciolo, will introduce Workshop participants to traditional techniques and methods involved in creating a small bas-relief in plaster.
Each participant will be guided to select subject matter of their choice and prepare a drawing to be developed into bas-relief.
Ample time will be provided for discussion and demonstrations to explain the basic features and characteristic of this type of sculpture. Similarly, examples and demonstration of modelling, mould making and casting will be used to illustrate the various stages of production.
The workshop will include all stages of production, namely, creating a design, modelling in plasticine, plaster mould making, casting into plaster and surface finishing completed bas-relief.
On completion of work, participants will prepare their bas-reliefs for a short-term exhibition at Elysium Gallery where they will be able to present their work to family and friends. (Dates and details will be negotiated with participants.

‘Designing a bas-relief’ - exploring and understanding the characteristics and limitations of bas-relief to arrive at a design for development into a bas-relief.
Saturday 14th March - 9.30am. - 12.30pm.
‘Understanding materials and tools’ – Transferring design from paper to rendered/modelled in plasticine. Using tools for achieving a variety of textures.
Saturday 21 March - 9.30am. - 12.30pm.
‘Space and depth in bas-relief’ - Understanding how to portray volume in relief. ‘Show and Tell’ – discussion and evaluation
Saturday 28th 11th March - 9.30am. – 12.30pm.
‘Finishing modelling stage’ - Using a variety of tools and techniques to Complete the general design and selecting elements of detail to be added in later stages.
Saturday April 4- 9.30am. – 12.30pm.
‘Making a mould’ – How to estimate and mix plaster correctly. Using a variety of tools and techniques to make a mould.
Saturday 13th April - 9.30am. – 12.30pm.
‘Opening of mould and preparation for casting’ – Adding final details of design, cleaning of mould and preparations for casting including ‘walls’ and ‘release agents’. Casting of bas-relief into plaster.
Saturday 20th Aprl - 9.30am. – 12.30pm.
Finishing’ – Release of Casting, Cleaning and adding a surface colour/texture, and oil patina. ‘Show and Tell’, Evaluation and Discussion.
