Series 1: An Introduction to Art History - Western Art through the Ages
This engaging and interactive 11 hour program is designed to introduce art lovers to the fundamentals of Western art by guiding participants through some of the main periods on the art time-line from the art of the ancient Egypt and Mesopotemia through to the end of 19th Century.
Some of the themes that will be covered throughout the program are:
- The social function of Art making
- Art and the human brain
- Art & Civilization-Culture
- Art & politics
- Art and ideas
- Art and identity
- The role and depiction of human figure in Art
This informative program will run over six 2 -hour sessions every second Sunday of the month starting on Sunday March 7, 2021 and ending on Sunday May 23 and will be held in a casual, relaxed and friendly environment where participant input and open discussion is greatly encouraged. This is a great opportunity to get to know others who, like you, want to share their passion for art through open discussions and sharing of opinions about art, history and culture.
( A 10 minute break is built in Half way through each presentation)
Light refreshments are served before and after each of the presentations.
Aside from acquiring a general understanding of the development of Art from ancient times through to the beginnings of the 20th Century, participants will have the opportunity to share their opinions and views on Art and Culture with others while they deepen their knowledge and become familiar with a wide range of ideas and iconic artworks and artists throughout history.
The total cost of this 6 Session program is $350 (gst inclusive) and includes light snacks and refreshments.

Elio is the founder and owner of Gallery Elysium, a Commercial Art Gallery, Artist Workshop and Cultural Centre in Hawthorn Victoria.
Elio commenced his artistic training at an early age under his father; writer, journalist and painter Nino Sanciolo. In 1985 he consolidated his training by completing a Bachelor’s degree at RMIT specializing in Painting and Printmaking followed by a Graduate Diploma in Education at Mercy Teachers College in 1986 (Currently Australian Catholic University)
Since then, Elio has worked extensively as an artist and secondary arts educator for over 30 years. His passion for the Arts led him to establish Gallery Elysium, a Commercial Art Gallery, Artist Workshop and Cultural centre in Hawthorn Victoria, with a view to supporting local emerging and established Artists and propagating the arts in all their forms into the wider community through contemporary Art exhibitions, cultural presentations, Art tours and Art Workshops.
Elio's otrher interests include music, martial arts and chess.
